Shortly after news broke that Star Wars Battlefront 2 would be ditching the season pass, EA’s public relations team reached out to Mashable to ask the site to withhold the news about the season pass. The reasoning behind the request was that the company hasn’t officially decided on its post launch plans or season pass quite yet.

It’s entirely possible that EA may ultimately ditch the tried and true method of a season pass, though the PR message seems to hint that the finer details of any post launch plans are not finalized yet. While DICE is aware of the content fragmenting problem in the current Star Wars Battlefront, it’s likely trying to find a balance between keeping the player base unified and still making a few dollars post launch as well.

Community fragmenting due to season passes, a situation which essentially divides the player base between those with the content and those without, is a current problem for many online shooters and is likely something the developers would like to avoid with the sequel. Still, with pre-order bonuses and deluxe content hinting at the inclusion of in-game items like new characters, skins, and other unlocks, fans shouldn’t be too surprised to see some sort of monetization method after the game launches.

While many games these days, such as Titanfall 2, are embracing the idea of free post-launch content many are still pushing out premium content for a price. DICE is very much embedded in this style as Battlefield 1 has a Premium Pass which grants bonuses and post-launch content to those who have purchased it. The first Star Wars Battlefront is also firmly in the season pass camp as well, which as a result, has severely fragmented the community over the game’s lengthy lifespan.
