For those that might be unfamiliar with Bulletstorm, here’s a plot summary to help set the mood:

Plant and Lava men? Maybe you have to fight different elements all Captain Planet style? Not sure but they’re here and so is Bulletstorm protagonist Grayson Hunt, who’s got a million ways to dispatch these baddies.

What really grabs me about Bulletstorm is the Smash TV style arcade sensibility mixed with interesting combat mechanics. While some of the abilities in Bulletstorm are obviously derivative of more classic games (Duke Nukem boot, anyone?), it’s the way they impolitely slam them together to give a real feel of rough-and-tumble combat that makes it work.

Of course, it’s always fun to be rewarded for creative carnage as well. Environmental damage and destruction has been around for a while now, but not usually to this degree. The bonus points really get you thinking about new ways to f*#% up some mutant criminals.

The weapon selection doesn’t seem to be lacking at all – Grayson’s packing lightning, energy whips and a whole case of unopened cans of whoop-ass to unleash on this planet of crazies.

The levels and environments are in a class of their own for a first person shooter, as they are both lush and vivid while still keeping you focused on the action.

Yes, that’s right – giant monster battles, rocket copters and bears, oh my!

I’ve always been a huge FPS fan ever since I first booted up Pathways Into Darkness back in the day, and it takes quite a bit of effort to set a title apart from all the other shooters coming out every year (especially on Xbox). Bulletstorm really looks like they are taking that fact to heart and doing everything possible to climb out of the humdrum and be unique in the crowd.

Between the weapons, arcade-style feel, huge boss battles and fantastic environments, EA and People Can Fly’s Bulletstorm is shaping up to be a “Halo Killer” in my mind. But of course, I could be wrong, and I’m sure you’ll tell me why in the comments.

Bulletstorm is slated for release on February 22, 2011 for Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3.
