Following the news that Titanfall 2’s sales have been disappointing, with many pointing to Battlefield 1’s proximity as the culprit, EA has again defended its release date schedule. During the company’s latest financial call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson explained that “there’s really three types of players,” including “people that really love Battlefield and that kind of big strategic gameplay that will orient in that direction; the player that loves the fast, fluid, kinetic gameplay of Titanfall 2 that really orient in that direction; and the player that just has to play the two greatest shooters this year and will buy both....

As part of the settlement between Activision and EA over their parts in the West/Zampella case with Activision, it has come to light that Respawn was initially tasked by Electronic Arts with developing a sci-fi shooter meant to compete with Microsoft’s Halo franchise. Though Call of Duty trounces Halo in the sales numbers, no title occupies that space better than Bungie and now 343 Industries’ franchise. Unfortunately, for gamers, that responsibility of making a “Halo-killer” was then passed on to EA’s Redwood-based studio and Respawn Entertainment was left to their own devices....

According to EA CEO Andrew Wilson, a “great many” of Switch owners also own an Xbox One, PS4, or PC, and would rather play EA’s games there than on the Switch. Wilson elaborated that the company has a few questions it asks itself when deciding which platforms to put games on, primarily focusing on whether or not the game is a good fit with the console’s ecosystem and community. According to EA’s data, gamers tend to gravitate towards their home consoles more than the Switch when it comes to EA’s games, so it doesn’t make a lot of sense for the company to port titles there....

Activision has accused Zampella and West of “insubordination.” The publisher further alleges that, while they were still employed by Activision, the two had engaged in “[a] myriad of improper activities,” including talks with other publishers. EA and Respawn deny that any such talks ever took place. Says Gibeau: Growing, indeed. To date, Modern Warfare 2 has grossed more than a billion dollars for Activision. No doubt, EA hopes Respawn will be able to recreate the success Zampella and West experienced with Infinity Ward....
