Today, the 51 judging publications for the Game Critics Awards: Best of E3 2018 announced this year’s nominees, which is comprised of 56 products, with winners to be announced on Monday, July 2. However, nowhere to be found on the list is CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, with the title having been left off due to a technicality. As it so happens, in order to be eligible for nomination, games had to have been “hands-on playable” to voting publications for at least 5 minutes of gameplay during E3, with the studio having only shown off what it looks like being played....

Disney and Wargaming.Net’s announcements follow the recent E3 cancellation from Activision, and the reveal that Electronic Arts is putting on an “EA Play” event during the week of E3 2016 rather than attend the event. Despite the exodus of high-profile publishers from this year’s E3, the Entertainment Software Association- the group that puts on E3 - remains adamant that E3 is still important. Speaking to MCV, ESA VP Rich Taylor described E3 as “beyond relevant”, before going on to say that it is an “essential and critical” time for the video game industry....

That is, unless you happen to be Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello. As head of one of the most powerful (and, occasionally, the most hated) third-party game publishers in the world, Riccitiello has access to information that, frankly, most of us do not. Whatever Sony plans to reveal on February 20th (there are, of course, new rumors) and Microsoft intends to unveil at E3 2013, Riccitiello has already seen it, knows how it works, and has an idea of how gamers are going to respond to it....

Electronic Arts has filed a patent that it hopes will allow it to find an alternative way to controlling characters in video games, including camera movement. In the patent, EA uses first-person shooter games as an example. It explains that FPS games typically have the player controlling the character with one analog stick, and then using the other analog stick to move the camera around. This means that both of the player’s thumbs are occupied at once, limiting what else they can do in the game at that time....

A post on Twitter from EA revealed that college football games are returning with EA Sports College Football. Excitement started building almost immediately for the return of the popular sports games, but given the state of the NCAA regulations, this may hint at a very different game than the previous NCAA Football titles. Fans may end up receiving something more similar to Doug Flutie’s Maximum Football 2019 than the NCAA Football games they remember....

A side quest will begin during Dying Light 2’s 14th story quest, entitled Welcome On Board. That sidequest, simply entitled Aitor, concerns the important NPC being laid up in a hospital bed, leaving the player to choose whether and how to heal him. Should Aiden heal Aitor in Dying Light 2? Choosing to go through with the Aitor sidequest and successfully saving Aitor comes with a variety of benefits. Saving him will involve a slight hassle, but will reward the player with XP and items....

The trailer for the sequel paints a bleak portrait of a post-apocalyptic future, one that not only includes zombies, but very scary human enemies also in the forms of gangs or militias. The striking image in the trailer of people being hanged at a public execution with a man exclaiming that those who break the rules will be executed and left to root should show the kind of world players are in for with Dying Light 2....

In the demo, Dying Light 2 protagonist Aiden Caldwell is participating in a deal meant to broker drinking water for the people of a small settlement. Techland says that the game is set during a Modern Dark Age, so these areas function more like small towns, which are beholden to larger, castle-like establishments. The Colonel, who controls a water pumping plant, runs one of those establishments. Aiden’s friend Frank is at the head of the deal between the Wildcard Factions and the Colonel, but things go wrong and he is shot....

According to a recent report from PC Gamer, Techland has inserted a nice little Easter Egg into Dying Light 2 which reveals a number of callbacks to previous games the studio has worked on. Among other things, players will have the ability to get hold of The Left Finger of gloVa, which is, for want of a better phrase, a weapon that gives the power of literal “finger guns.”...

Along with plenty of content, Dying Light 2 appears to come packed with extras for each of the different platforms it’s appearing on. Naturally, PC players will likely have the most options considering the different builds PC players can have. On the console side, fans were likely surprised to see that the Xbox Series X version is nearly double in size to the PS5 edition. While the reasoning for that remains a mystery, console fans will have multiple graphic options to pick from to better their experience....

The key difference comes between the PS5 and Xbox Series X, which sees the files size double between the two. The PS5 version of Dying Light 2 measures 32.5GB, a rather efficient size for a game as large as Dying Light 2 at up to 4K will be. The Xbox Series X version of Dying Light 2 comes in at a much more substantial 72GB. While very large, this number is in line with Cyberpunk 2077....

Players of the PC version of Dying Light can kill zombies and explore Resident Evil 2’s police station by downloading the free mod here, then launching the “Custom Maps” game mode and selecting the map from there. Players can access the modding tool used to make custom maps via the Workshop tab on the Steam page for Dying Light. ‘Calamar’ is configured for solo play, although modders can opt to enable co-op gameplay instead....

E.U. officials told The New York Times and CNN on Friday that senior diplomats had negotiated a list of countries deemed safe for travel with the bloc when it reopens on July 1. While the U.S. did not make the list, along with Russia and several other countries, China was reportedly deemed to be a safe country from which to welcome travelers. The E.U. travel list could still be changed before the start of next month, as it has yet to receive formal backing from member state leaders....

Apparently, others agreed with my assessment. When I arrived at the private booth to see the demonstration of the game, there was a huge throng of people trying to see this game. The booth had been set up for nine visitors at a time, but due to the demand, Square Enix packed as many people as possible.
